2017 season is almost upon us

Well 1 month today the 29th of April, we will play our first match of the new season. Fringford are in Division 3 of the Oxfordshire Cricket Association. The first game will be at home to Cairns Fudge. All of the fixtures are now on our website as well as links to the OCA website so as you can keep up to date with our progress throughout the season.

Fringford look forward to the new season with some new players making up the squad. But who is going to take over from the retirering John Bacon as the hitter of the most sixes this season? Be sure to come back to find out.

The club are always looking for more players, helpers or supporters to come and cheer us on, on a Saturday afternoon. So why not pop up to see how we are getting on at one of Oxfordshire’s most picturesque cricket grounds.

Fringford in good form in May

Following on from my last post it has been a busy time for both the Saturday and Mid week teams. The Saturday team had 3 matches as did the midweek team.

On Saturday the 14th Fringford traveled to Wescott for a league match. Fringford batted first and hit a respectable 175 – 5 from their allotted overs. But in reply the hosts manged to get the target for the loss of 7 wickets with 7 balls remaining. It was a close match that we were unlucky to have lost, Wescott needed 18 from the last two overs and managed to get them with an over to spare.

On Saturday the 21st we had a home match against Kidlington. The visitors went into bat first and scored an impressive 212 for 8. It took the Fringford bowlers some time to find the right length to bowl in very damp conditions. But with Fringford waiting to bat both teams could only watch as the heavens opened and the match was abandoned.

The weekend just gone saw the first team in action in the the 1st round of the Telegraph Cup away at Risinghurst. Fringford batted first and hit a very good 273 for 8 wickets. John Bacon top scored with 72 ablely assisted by Rob Gascoigne 34, Paul Hammond 32 & Thomas Bacon 30. The home side were soon under the cosh being reduced to 65 all out, George Williams and Christian Mann doing the damage. Fringford are now at home to Minster Lovell in the next round on Sunday 3rd of July.

The mid week team also had a game called of due to the weather when the rain forced the home match with Preston Bissett being called of. But they have managed to play two matches.

On Monday the 16th of May we were at home to Maids Moreton in the first round of the Buckingham Advertiser cup. Fringford scored a well worked 106 for 6 wickets and then took the attack to the visitors restricting them to 74 for 10.

The following week we were at home to Gawcott in the League shield. Fringford batted first scoring 78 for 3. Phil King top scoring with 29. In reply Fringford restricted Gawcott to 67 for 6 wickets with Christian Mann taking 2 for 11.

So overall a very good month for both teams.

I would also like to add a special mention for Thomas Bacon who scored his first competitive hundred for his school the Royal Latin in a match against Akley. He scored 108 with 8 sixes an 12 fours. Congratulations Thomas.

A good end to the first week of the season

Saturday the 30th of April saw the the start of the season. We hosted Kilkenny from Carterton not Ireland! in the first OCA Div 3 match of the season. In a rain affected match where the covers were on and of several times Kilkenny batted first and put the Fringford bowling attack to the sword scoring 222 from their allotted overs. After starting the reply brightly with Rob Gascoigne scoring with 37 Fringford were unable to keep up with the run rate and were bowled out for 140.

But we faired much better in the Buckingham mid-week league on Wednesday. Fringford traveled to March Gibbon for the first league match of the season. Fringford batted well in this 20 over match getting 60 runs for three wickets, Thomas Bacon top scoring with 16 not out. In reply Marsh Gibbon were 58 for 8 wickets with Christian Mann taking 3 wickets for 17 runs and Shaun Foote taking 3 wickets for 10 runs.

On Saturday the 7th of May we had our second OCA Div 3 match against Stanton Harcourt and our second home fixture in a row. With the sun shinning and the ground looking a picture Fringford were in determined mood. Batting first Fringford scored 160 for 9 wickets with Thomas Bacon & Shaun Foote taking the attack to the bowlers, Bacon top scoring with 32. In reply Stanton opted for aggression over keeping up with the required run rate. Most batsmen getting themselves in before going for the boundary and paying the price falling short and getting caught and being all out for 109.

So an eventful and busy first week for the teams and ground staff ends with two victories. We are at home this Wednesday in a Shield cup match to Preston Bissett, please do come along and support the team, then away in the OCA Div 3 to Wescott next weekend.

Fringford to host the Steve Dixon Cup Final

Fringford Cricket Club a delighted to announce that we have been selected to host this years Steve Dixon Cup Final which will take place on Sunday the 14th of August. It is a privilege to host one of the OCC’s premier cup finals and is testament to all the hard work put in by Sean and all the ground staff.

Fringford end the season with fine away win.

Fourteen-year-old Thomas Bacon proved age is no issue as he starred for Fringford in their five-wicket win at Cairns Fudge in Division 3.

Batting first, Fudge would have been satisfied with their 221-7 as Mark Chandler top-scored with 49.

But Bacon’s brilliant 80 and Harry Collard’s 75 helped Fringford to 223-5 and an excellent victory.

Midweek Team Secure Semi Final Victory

Fringford Cricket club 2015Congratulations to the Mid Week team for beating Maids Moreton in the George Blow Cup Semi Final on Monday. Fringford got 172 for 5. Jonny Reid scored 88. M.Moreton 89 all out. Christian Mann 3 for 22. David MacDonald 4 for 16 and Thomas Bacon 2 for 12.

The final of The George Blow Cup just happens to be played at Fringford on Friday 24th July at 6.30

Midweek team start with a win

In Arctic conditions in Fringford on Wednesday night the midweek team got their league campaign underway with a win over Hinton.

In a match reduced to 12 overs a side because of the weather Fringford batted first reaching 97 for 6. Ade Measday top scoring with 31 not out. Fringford then restricted Hinton to 92 all out with John Bacon taking 5 for 15.

So a great start to the season with both the Saturday team and the midweek side recording victories.

We are at home on Saturday against Eynsham in the OCA Div 3 and again on Monday in the Buckingham Advertiser Cup against local rivals Marsh Gibbon.

A winning start to a new season for Fringford as they defeated Watlington by 75 runs on a chilly day close to the Ridgeway. The skipper managed to lose the toss and Fringford were put into bat by the opposing skipper on a track that proved extremely difficult to bat on. Both John Bacon and Ade Measday played onto their stumps early on and when Ed Blight middled one straight into a surprised fielders midriff, Fringford were 34 for 3. Skipper Tony Burcham (32) and Rob Gascoigne (36) took the score along to 70, before Tony was bowled by one that stayed rather low. Rob and Ian Hedley (26) attacked the Watlington change bowling and added 65 together, before Rob was out caught. Hedders was bowled soon after, but Royston Blake came in and added a swift 16 runs, swatting a rather large six along the way. Unfortunately a mix up led to young George Williams being run out, but the tail added a welcome 27 runs in the final few overs to take the Fringford total to 160 for 9 at the close.

Young George opened up the bowling, bowling some lovely away swing and was ably supported by the evergreen Steve Mitchell, bowling a great line and length at the other end. George grabbed the first wicket, clean bowling the opener and Mitch followed suit the following over, to leave the batting side on 12 for 2. George ended his spell with great figures of 6-2-9-1 and Mitch bowled through for figures of 12-6-18-1. Watlington were always behind the run rate and even more tight bowling from JK ensured that the game was firmly in Fringford’s control. JK ended with a fifth wicket on his last delivery and very much deserved his five wicket haul and figures of 12-1-29-5. Hedders mopped up the tail with a quick three wickets, finishing with 7-0-23-3 and Fringford ran out comfortable winners.

A few welcome beers were sunk in the clubhouse and the Fines Master took great pleasure in ensuring all misdemeanours were highlighted and duly paid for!

So, a great confidence boosting start to the season for the team, who look forward to a home fixture against Eynsham next Saturday.

CAPTAIN CALLING

New season = new challenges = be prepared

Well, the time is almost upon us to dig out the cricket bag from the garage, dust off the whites, oil the bat and turn the arm over in the nets. The new cricket season is nearly here!!

There will be some new faces on show this season for Fringford CC (a warm welcome to those newbies) and this coupled with a strong youth contingent, helped along by a few experienced (doddery) old blokes, should hopefully lead to some good, competitive cricket this summer.

Although the team finished safe from relegation at the end of last season, injuries, lack of availability and a certain lack of application in some quarters, led to a somewhat disappointing season and the skipper and committee have high hopes of raising performance levels this year.

As a team, let’s approach the season in a positive manner from the outset, starting with attending net sessions wherever possible and by communicating your availability to the “Major” at the earliest opportunity.

BE PREPARED

Pre match warm ups certainly added a percentage improvement to performance and it is my intention to carry on conducting these prior to both innings, so be prepared to limber up early.

A fines system will be run again this year (max £2.00), so be prepared to be critiqued (and fined accordingly) on your performance and antics, both on and off the field of play.

If you wish to show off your superhuman qualities and score 50’s and 100’s, or take match winning 5 wicket hauls, please be prepared to dig into your pocket and “get a jug in” for the mere mortals in the team, so they can toast your immortality and deity.

The serious reason behind all these points is that, at any level of sport, it is proven that a team that bonds, socialises and works hard for each other, both on and off the field, will remain motivated and perform to a higher standard, which, in a competitive division, may prove the extra factor between winning and losing (and I am sure no one likes the “L” word!!).

I look forward to seeing you all at the nets and then again on the hallowed ground at “Fringers”, asking for your support and commitment along the way, the aim being to make this a season to remember!!
